DOOR GIRLZ DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

A pathway to the Los Angeles comedy scene through The Crow

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Door Girlz Development Program is a community-focused initiative designed to give up-and-coming comics a foot in the door of the Los Angeles comedy scene through The Crow, Santa Monica's newest comedy club! Our goal is to offer meaningful stage opportunities while building a strong, supportive culture around live comedy and club operations.

At it's most simple iteration: Door Girlz do just that! They volunteer no more than a 3 hour shift, helping check in audience members at the door and also help with basic opening & closing duties alongside Crow staff. They get to perform the "Cold Open" sets at the shifts they work.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

The Door Girl program is a developmental program for comedians who we have seen working on their craft for a while through our open mics, or who have submitted a tape that clearly reflects they have been working on standup for years before arriving at The Crow.

The Crow's mission is to uplift voices that have historically not been given equal opportunities for stage time and development, but ALL are welcome to apply.

You should live in a comfortable commuting distance to Santa Monica, considering most door shifts will be weekday & weekend evenings.

IF ACCEPTED HERE'S WHAT'S REQUIRED

  • Complete 1 In-Person Training Session
  • Before you can hit the stage and Cold Open our stand up shows, you must volunteer 5 shifts. (Note: completing a Sexual Harassment Prevention Course counts as 1 shift). This will serve as a "probation period" where we evaluate mutual fit.
  • After 5 shifts, you will be eligible to begin performing 3-minute performance slots.
  • We highly encourage participants to sign up for both performance and non-performance roles to fully support the club and its mission. The Club Operations Manager will be sure that all Door Girlz get a fair shot at shifts and stage times, and will do their best to attach your comedy style to shows they think you will succeed on.

ONGOING DEVELOPMENT

Every 3 months, an "Evaluation Mic" will be held at the club and Nicole will provide notes, feedback, and consider potential promotions within the program or club structure so you can further hone your craft, voice, and stage presence.

Your time and effort will be recognized, and we aim to support those who actively support the space.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can I apply if I don't identify as a woman or non-binary?

A: Absolutely! We want folks who align with and support The Crow's mission.

Q: What do shifts look like?

A: Most shifts are from 7-10 PM Wednesdays through Saturdays, but we DO have daytime shows on weekends, and occasional nights with later shows. We understand that you are volunteering your time so we aim to respect that through a tight shift where you check-in audience members up top, get to perform, and then enjoy a show. The staff may ask you to help in snapping pictures of the comedians so we can tag them on our Instagram story. At the end of the night you, the bartender, and tech person will all help close up the space.

Q: Can I opt out after a few shifts if it's not for me?

A: Yes, you are free to leave the program at any time. We appreciate communication and if there's a reason for leaving that we can know to better the program, we'd love to hear it! If you need to take a break and would like to rejoin us, communicate that as well!

Q: I can't make it to The Crow's open mics! How can I be considered?

A: Send in your tape through the form on this page. Make an extra note in "How You Heard About Us" that you're interested in joining the Door Girlz Program.
